Navratri
The festival of worship and dance is referred to as Navratri. In Sanskrit, the name Navaratri literally translates to "nine nights" (Nava means "nine" and Ratri means "nights"). Nine manifestations of Shakti/Devi, or female divinity, are worshipped during the course of these nine nights and days. The nine-day Navratri celebration is held in remembrance of the goddess Durga's nine forms.
According to Hindu mythology, the festival is widely observed as a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, when the Goddess Shakti (Maa Durga) defeated the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura following a protracted conflict that lasted nine days and nights.
